Ursula,
I don't even have the words to adequately convey what a wonderful experience I had last week in the canyon.  It was everything you claimed and so much more.  I'm sure I'll be back before too long.  I hope you'll stay in touch.  Thanks for all you do and who you are.
                                                                       Your friend,
                                                                           =Rich Gallego

Entering the Canyon on horseback
a different rhythm takes over
time has a new meaning
I go with the flow

In the washes and the cliffs
I find a new perspective on life
There is a letting go of tension
an easing into the serenity of the rocks, the colors, the texture

It is a privilege to paint in this sacred place
surrounded by beauty and majesty
George is there to help me to see
as I chase the play of light and shadow on the canyon walls

The darkness envelopes the camp
the firelight reflects on the cliffs
the laughter echoes in the canyon
and the group comes together as friends

With stars and moon overhead, I sleep
The owl and the coyote remind me I am a visitor
I awake to the sounds of a horse grazing,
the chopping of wood and the early
conversation of friends
Soon we are gathered with steaming cups cradled,
watching the sun touch the
canyon rim

Let me not forget, but carry with me this special experience
so that it can be recalled to replenish
my spirit when feeling overwhelmed with
busyness
Thank you to the Navaho people for sharing
You have shown me it is possible to live in two worlds

Thank you Ursula for opening this door.

Rock monotype by Amy

To all who participated in the Canyon de Chelly plein air painting workshop;

I just want to take a few minutes to say how glad I am to have met and painted with each of you. It was the first time I had the experience of being in nature with other artists and sharing that was truly a gift in my life. Even though I had some major "difficulties" I had to deal with about my own work, each of you was more than kind and caring. I am most grateful for all that was shared during that most amazing adventure.

Since returning home I have worked on some monotypes (one of a kind prints) the inspiration for which is some of the painting I did in the canyon. I am including one (hopefully for your enjoyment). If the place seems familiar it is because it is Rock, if it seems odd/backwards, it is because the nature of printmaking always results in a reversal of the original image on the plate.

So, thank you all again for all you added to the goodness of the workshop. With any luck, I will see some of you again.

                       Sincerely,
~ Amy B  (that's Amy number 1 in case you forgot)

Little did I know how important the window in the roof of my tent would be!   It allowed me to watch the movement of the constellations in the night sky and to see the first sunlight on the canyon rim each morning.   Justin is right...it's all about balance, isn't it?  This was a special adventure to savor for a lifetime.  Thanks to everyone.
