CLASS DESCRIPTION

Horses have long carried us physically to new places - into town, into battle, to new lands. But the Spirit of the horse can also carry us to new places in the Heart and toward new depths of the Soul. This is Inspiration.

Our workshop is designed to provide access to the inspiration horses can give to writers. We are not necessarily aiming to write about horses, although that would be fine too, but rather to gain access to the horses’ ability to arouse us to better writing .

Equines have a magnetic attraction for many of us, We are stirred by their Grace, Power, and Beauty. We marvel at their Honesty & Vulnerability. We revel in their Sensitivity to non-verbal communication and ability to Connect A goal of this workshop is to create writing with the same magnetic attraction to the reader, to connect with the reader.

So, how can a horse help ?
His soft nicker will be our catalyst:
Horses will be actually in our class
with us at all times.
An afternoon ride in the mountains
is an option.

•     One writing exercise involves imagining seeing thru the horses Eyes, with their extreme wide angle vision, as opposed to our human narrow ‘predator‘ focus. This unfamiliar ‘way-of-seeing’ prompts a wider repertoire of visual descriptions and greater receptivity to ‘right-brain’ thinking.

•     Equines and Humans do not speak the same language, but nonetheless, communicate fully both emotionally and physically. Paying attention to this deeper level of relating can stimulate more effective expression.

•     Horses cannot dissemble. In order to relate to them, we seek to make our communication as clear as possible. Being around them can motivate us to strive for such clarity in our writing.

•     A horse on a hillside can bring the landscape to life. Experiencing this in person encourages us to follow this example and strive to create natural scenes that ring true and are actual characters in our writing.
The extraordinary presence of the Arabian Stallion photographed to the right is a clear inspiration to achieve graceful and muscular prose.
